The originality of the Alliance Française is a personalized teaching, based on a constructive dialogue with the teacher, integrating the cultural dimension in language learning.  The curriculum follows the guidelines of the FRAMES program defining the different levels of language learning, thus able to be a global point of view and optimize the choice of courses.

Adult courses are offered in levels (see below), and each level runs one year+. Classes are 2 hours long, once per week. Classes are enrolled and priced in 6-week sessions: $180 per 6-week session (12 class hours).  Late enrollment is $200.

- If you have never taken French before, email our Education Director, Karla Beck or call us at 314-432-0734 and inquire about our next beginner session.

- If you are not new to the French language, but new to the Alliance, please take the placement test first. We will reach out to you as soon as we receive your results and determine what classes suit your level best.

- If you are a current student and wish to register for your next session, please fill out and submit the registration form.

Levels offered

A1 - Beginner

You will be able to:

  • Understand and use familiar everyday expressions and very basic phrases aimed at the satisfaction of needs of a concrete type.
  • Introduce yourself and others and ask/answer questions about personal details such as where you live, people you know, things you have.
  • Interact in a simple way provided the other person talks slowly and clearly and is prepared to help.

A2 - Advanced Beginner

You will be able to:

  • Understand sentences and frequently used expressions related to areas of most immediate relevance (e.g. very basic personal and family information, shopping, local geography, employment).
  • Communicate according to simple and routine tasks requiring simple and direct exchanges of information on familiar and routine matters.
  • Describe, in simple terms, aspects of your background, immediate environment and matters in areas of immediate need.

B1 - Intermediate

You will be able to:

  • Understand the main points of clear standard input on familiar matters regularly encountered in work, school, leisure, etc.
  • Deal with most situations likely to arise whilst traveling in an area where the language is spoken.
  • Produce simple connected text on topics that are familiar or of personal interest.
  • Describe experiences and events, dreams, hopes & ambitions and briefly give reasons and explanations for opinions and plans.

B2 - Independent

You will be able to:

  • Understand the main ideas of complex text on both concrete and abstract topics, including technical discussions in his/her field of specialization.
  • Interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with native speakers quite possible without strain for either party.
  • Produce clear, detailed text on a wide range of subjects and explain a viewpoint on a topical issue giving the advantages and disadvantages of various option

C1 - Proficient

You will be able to:

  • Understand with ease virtually everything heard or read.
  • Summarize information from different spoken and written sources, reconstructing arguments and accounts in a coherent presentation.
  • Express yourself spontaneously, very fluently and precisely, differentiating finer shades of meaning even in more complex situations.
