Calling all writers, poets and creative individuals, it’s time for a French Haiku contest! Write and submit your own Haiku (in French) for a chance to win a small notebook with your Haiku printed on the cover! The Alliance Française de St. Louis’ Board of Directors will judge the Haiku poems submitted, and the favorites will be read aloud at our Fête de la rentrée event on September 21, 2019.
To submit your Haiku, use the form at the bottom of this page or email yours to firstname.lastname@example.org. The deadline to submit your Haiku is September 14, 2019.
Not sure how to write a Haiku? No worries! Here are some guidelines to follow.
There are only three lines, totaling 17 syllables. The first line is 5 syllables, the second line is 7 syllables, and the third line is 5 syllables like the first.
Punctuation and capitalization are up to the poet, and need not follow the rigid rules used in structuring sentences.
A haiku does not have to rhyme, in fact usually it does not rhyme at all.
It can include the repetition of words or sounds.
L'hiver est très beau
Je joue dans la nouvelle neige
La neige est très froide!
