This summer, take a cinematic journey into one of the most complex and defining periods of French history. The Alliance Française de St. Louis is proud to present Occupied France During WWII, a free Summer Film Series exploring life in France under German occupation through the lens of four remarkable French films. All screenings will take place at the Alliance Française and are free and open to AFSTL members and your guests.
This week, we will be watching Une affaire de femmes (1988), which follows Marie Latour (Isabelle Huppert) who struggles to support her two children as her loutish husband, Paul (François Cluzet) is away at a labor camp during World War II. After helping a neighbor with an abortion, Marie realizes she can improve her family's finances by assisting other women who are trying to terminate unwelcome pregnancies. Paul returns home to find he has no place in his wife's new life -- so out of jealousy, after the war ends he reports her wartime activities to the authorities.
